It's been a long few weeks, my friends.
Tonight will be the funeral service for the long-term partner of a colleague/friend. Mirha Soleil Ross' partner Mark killed himself last Thursday, and I've been charged with spreading the news about the death first, and then the service. People calling me all week long wanting all the gory details. "So he killed himself, but HOW did he kill himself?" "Who found the body?" People are so bloody annoying. |

| interesting way to "other" the shooter |
[Apr. 17th, 2007|12:01 pm] |
I was just reading one of the articles online about the massacre at Virginia Tech and how they've just identified the shooter.
In the first line of the story they say:
"A student from South Korea was the gunman who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech university, police said on Tuesday. They gave no motive for the worst shooting rampage in U.S. history."
What does that evoke in terms of the shooter's identity? That he is an immigrant, that he is not "one of us", that somehow this is motivated by racial and political tensions.
At the very end of the article is says this:
"Cho was a South Korean citizen who has lived in the United States since 1992, said U.S. immigration spokesman Chris Bentley. He and his family lived in Centreville, Virginia."
So he's lived in the United States for 15 years of his 23 years on the planet - and has therefore been in the States since the age of 8 - but they're still talking about him as a "South Korean". |

My life is now complete! A press release today from Mirvish Productions!

"With unforgettable songs like Hungry Eyes, the Academy Award-winning (I've Had) The Time Of My Life and classics like Do You Love Me?, Dirty Dancing is a pop culture icon. Set in the innocent summer of 1963, it's the coming-of-age love story of the talented and headstrong Johnny Castle, who teaches ballroom dancing in holiday resort, and young "Baby" Houseman, a guest at the resort who falls in love with this boy from the wrong side of the tracks during a family summer holiday. It's the sort of film that probably made you say, "That movie would make a great live musical!"
Well, dust off your dancing shoes. Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote and co-produced the movie, HAS made Dirty Dancing into a live musical... and it's going to have its North American premiere right here, in Toronto, at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, with preview performances from October 31, 2007, leading to a grand opening on November 15, 2007. With unforgettable songs like Hungry Eyes, the Academy Award-winning (I've had) the Time of My Life and classics like Do You Love Me?, Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage is a coming-of-age love story involving the handsome, talented and headstrong dancer Johnny Castle and sweet, young thing "Baby" Houseman, a rich kid who falls in love with the dancing boy from the wrong side of the tracks during a summer resort family holiday. | things that make you go hmmm |
[Sep. 8th, 2006|01:35 pm] |
One thing I've noticed is that quite a few folks who've seen my zoo photos have said "You look so happy!"
Should I assume therefore I don't usually look happy?
I always used to think I should go into the "animal care" field in some way. I wonder if its too late. |

| zoo camp! |
[Sep. 6th, 2006|01:00 pm] |
For anyone interested, here are some pics that were taken at my camp experience over the weekend!
http://www.nerdgrrl.org/gallery/kylezoo
I fully recommend opening a few of the thumbnails up to full size to really appreciate them.
And to really appreciate the picture of me with the big snake, you need to know that's an anaconda, which kills its prey by constricting, crushing them and squeezing all the air out of their lungs while being wrapped around them. And if you think I'm too big for it, know this: Anacondas have been known to eat deer.
In this case, of course, they probably just fed the anaconda about a truckload of food to make sure there was absolutely no danger whatsoever.
We did handle venomous animals like scorpions, tarantulas, and other snakes, and none of them were "doctored" in any way.
Ironically the only animal that WAS doctored was the skunk. They descented the skunk. But venom that can kill you? That's okay. |

| camp! |
[Sep. 3rd, 2006|09:50 pm] |
I went to something called Safari Zoo Camp this weekend. (the unofficial slogan of Safari Zoo Camp is "You Might Die".)
There's a place in Orono, Ontario called Jungle Cat World and in the summer they run programmes for kids and teens, and then Labour Day weekend is the "adult" programme.
Highlights of my weekend included: holding a fox, having a tarantula on my head, having a huge anaconda wrapped around me, playing tug a war with a full grown male lion, feeding a tiger, having two lemurs eat from my hand while sitting on my lap, holding a baby spider monkey, flying a hawk, holding a descented skunk, getting wolves to howl at night - which sparked the lion to roar in the night - and playing with a baby cougar named Boris. I'm sure there was more - some african parrots, a few reptiles of different kinds, but that pretty much covers it. Not bad, eh?
Hey - friends who are meeting me for dinner for my birthday on Tuesday - try to look surprised when you hear all these things again there. |

| supplements info??? |
[Jun. 20th, 2006|03:47 pm] |
Got a question from an FTM guy who is not currently on hormones, but is using supplements.
Right now he's using a protein complex with Tribulus and ZMA. What is good? What is dangerous? Can he take over supplements to help him masculinize?
I know so little about this, I don't even know what to ask.

For those interested, the ceremony for my induction into the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives will take place in the Rotunda of Toronto City Hall (Ground Floor) on Sunday August 21st at 2:00 p.m.. The collection will remain on view for the week until Saturday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m.
I have a kick-ass black and white "GQ" kind of photo that makes me look thinner, cuter, like I have more hair, and overall just a better person with a higher IQ who eats more vegetables.
Just so you know.

| wow - not another entry! |
[May. 6th, 2005|03:11 pm] |
I haven't even had THIS year's vacation, but I'm already seriously considering a future "once in a lifetime" trip.
I found out about a "volunteer abroad" experience that sounds absolutely incredible. It involves doing wildlife conservation in South Africa. Here's three of the rotations I'd do:
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Vervet Rehabilitation Center for monkeys near Johannesburg. Volunteers may be caring for injured or orphaned monkeys as well as doing general work around the center.
- You will be working with a South African animal rescue organization located near Cape Town. Their goal is to provide animal health care to communities that cannot otherwise afford it and to provide re-homing services for abandoned and stray animals. Working here means you’ll be giving the animals daily love and care as well as feeding bathing, and helping in the adoption procedures.
- The Lion Park cares for and breeds indigenous lion species, including the rare white lion. It is also home to many of the other animals that make South Africa one of the wildlife jewels of the world. If you want to run wild with lions, giraffes, cheetah cubs, this is the place for you. Get involved with feeding and caring for the big cats, keeping their environment clean and maintaining the park.
I was so made for this experience. I'm going to find a way to do this if it kills me. (and it just might....."here kitty kitty kitty")
